Domestic Box Office Results

April 21, 2024

by Steven Anderson

Every year since 1977 there was a clear trend for Hollywood where more movies got released every year and with more movies came more revenue for theatres. However, that trend peaked in 2018. 2019 wasn’t a dramatic shift from the record peaks, but 2020 surely was due to Covid. Theatres haven’t been able to get back to their previous peaks, but 2023 served as a promising year for the future thanks to big successes such as Barbie and Oppenheimer. This year so far it looks like theatres are off to a slow start, but the big months are still ahead. Usually, big box office hits come in the summer, or closer to towards the end of the year. So, it’s still too early to tell how the year will go. Regardless of whether or not tickets sell, one thing is for certain, we probably won’t see 993 movies release in a single year like we did in 2018. That’s likely over saturation of the market since that’s 2.7 movies being released on average each day. There’s only so many times a year a consumer can go to the theater.
