MLB Payroll by Position

April 20, 2024

Below you’ll see the top earners of each position, the total pay allocated to each position along with the average and total number of players per position.

The most expensive position for teams to fill are the pitchers, mostly due to how many a team needs. Teams in 2024 are spending a combined $2.4B on pitching staff. That’s right, a B as in billions.

For defensive players, Shortstops outnumber the rest by far as they can often be seen as utility players and slide over to third or second if needed. There are quite a few catchers as well in the league since it’s such a physically demanding job and they play a role even on the bench. Catchers are required to warm up pitchers in the bullpen, and sometimes you’ll need to warm up more than one pitcher at a time, so subsequently you’ll need extra catchers.
