Prize pools in golf have grown substantially in the last decade. With the Masters going on right now I thought it would make sense to review just how much things have changed. In 2014 Bubba Watson won the tournament taking home $1,620,000. In 2024 the winner is scheduled to get $3,240,000 – exactly double the prize from 10 years ago. That’s a growth rate of roughly 7.2% per year, far outpacing inflation.
Scottie Scheffler is on a tear this year playing great golf. After just 8 tournaments though he’s already out earned the Earnings Champion of 7 of the last 10 years. Previous champions have played between 17-25 PGA tournaments in a year, so if Scottie continues at the pace he has been winning he’ll be earning a heck of a lot more than past winners.
